The History

  1. 1 The creation of the Saint Michael’s Theological Seminary in 1914 by the Anglican Church.
  2. 2 After the liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule and the subsequent Korean War the seminary was relocated to the present site in the south-western outskirt of the capital city of Seoul in the late 1950s.
  3. 3 The school was reinstated in legal terms in accordance with the official policy of the higher education system in the early 1980s.
  4. 4 Sungkonghoe University- A significant breakthrough came in the early 1990s when the school was granted an official charter of a full university status with the power of conferring degree on its own. Another exciting development was made in 1994 by a symbolically important change in the university title.

The stage was set for the school to become a comprehensive university, teaching a wide range of subjects not only in Christian theology and ministry but in humanities, social sciences, electronic engineering, information technology and computer science. The move was followed by the university’s admittance to the worldwide Anglican University Cooperative Committee, giving the institution an important membership in the international Anglican higher education network.

The university was increasingly considered by students, parents and educationalists to be a unique institution: open, progressive, inclusive, innovative, socially committed, and boldly experimental.

  5. 5 The university is reflecting on and dreaming of the second century of its mission in the run up to the centennial celebration in the year 2014. The second century will certainly lead us to the next level of engaging with the world through higher education: at the same time, it will also keep reminding us of our original purpose of our educational mission.
